Updates, updates and more updates! What a month! On February 26, Facebook introduced Canvas – another medium to help advertisers achieve any objective by giving businesses a fully customisable digital space to build stories.

What is it?

Facebook Canvas is a fully immersive mobile ad experience. It allows advertisers and marketers alike to combine a series of text, image, video and call-to-actions. We like to describe it as a mini microsite that’s accessible directly from Facebook.

Below is an example of a really simple Canvas ad created for a Cruise Line business:

What’s so good about it?

It’s all about the experience (you’ll hear this a lot in 2016!). With mobile usage on the rise, Canvas has adopted a smarter, more engaging way for people to consumer ads. They’ve enabled end-users to have the ability to swipe through a carousel of images, tilt to view panoramic images and zoom in to view images in detail, making the Canvas experience immersive and engaging in a way that mobile sites aren’t. The beauty about this is that Canvas uses the same technology that enables photos and videos load quickly on Facebook, this means that it’ll load a lot quicker than your average mobile site, keeping your users engaged for longer using cost-effective methods.

How does it impact brands?

The roll out of Canvas means that brands will be able to tap into the power of storytelling to raise brand awareness and lead consumers to purchase. Brands need to remember that education plays a big part in communicating a strong message through social media, by tapping into an advertising medium that lends itself to creative craft and delivering the best mobile experience, it’s a no brainer for brands to explore Canvas to connect with their new or existing audience.

Metrics to track

  • Average Duration of Canvas Viewed
The average amount of milliseconds people have spent viewing and interacting with your Canvas
  • Average % of Canvas Viewed
The average amount of your Canvas people have swiped through
