Social Media Statistics May 2016

It’s that time of the month where we can shed some light on May’s social media user based statistics within Australia. We’ve pulled together results on our top 6 favourite social media platforms, but you can check out the full report across all social media channels, including WhatsApp, Flickr, Reddit and more below.

TL;DR*: Facebook remains on top and is sitting at 15 million Australian Active Users, Instagram is coming second with a steady 5 million MAU (Monthly Active Users) and Snapchat is rising in the ranks with 2 Million MAU.

1. Facebook

Facebook has a steady 15,000,000 Australian users and remains the #1 social media site in Australia. Who was it that was saying Facebook is dead? *shakes fist*

2. Instagram

Our favourite platform, Instagram, is growing at a steady 5,000,000 Monthly Active Australian Users. Did you read that? FIVE MILLION active Australian users MONTHLY.

3. Tumblr

With a cheeky 4,400,000 Monthly Active Australian Users, Tumblr is attracting a highly visual crowd of Aussie’s who aren’t letting go of the network any time soon.

4. LinkedIn

Aussie professionals are still turning to LinkedIn with 3,800,000 Australian users. If you’re in the B2B market, this platform remains a fail proof way to target key decision makers.

5. Twitter

As suspected, Twitter remains at the bottom of the list with 2,800,000 Monthly Active Australian Users, which is reflective of the overall state of Twitter.

6. Snapchat

Ok, this could very well become our favourite platform, very, very soon (sorry Instagram!).

With 2,000,000 approx Monthly Active Australian Users, Snapchat is forever increasing its user rates with businesses and brands taking advantage of this hyperconnected social media platform. With the latest addition of being able to track the effectiveness of Snapchat in relation to sales, we’re keeping a very close eye on this brand for the next “big thing.”

*Too Long; Didn’t Read (we’ve got a social media glossary coming soon, promise!)

As always, sending our thanks to for compiling these statistics, check out the full report.
