Luxury online shopping website Net-a-Porter have just launched their own social media network, “The Net Set,” and in case you hadn’t heard, the game has officially been changed.
The development of this app comes as a result of the company’s mobile sales climbing a massive 40% over the last year and they’re not stopping there. The Net Set has been designed to combine the ease and convenience of online shopping with the pleasurable aspects of brick-and-mortar buying. In press release from the company they stated, “today, we are living the golden era of digital exploration, where connectivity is instant and the world mingles on the mobile web. From today, the most fashionable of these will be known as The Net Set.”
So how is this app going to bridge the gap between social media and shopping? Think Instagram but with a shoppable live feed with users that don’t gather friends or followers, but ‘admirers’ and it doesn’t get much more ‘fashion’ than that! Not only have Net-a-Porter developed a way to make mobile shopping a breeze they are doing it by playing on their customers vanities.
There will be a high profile ‘Style Counsel’ to influence trends, a discover feature with a live feed of the most covetable and in demand items and ‘Style Tribes’ to keep up to date with trends such as “Black is the New Black,” “Double Denim,” “Monochrome,” or “The Bohemians.” The Net Set is here to revolutionise buying and this is only beginning.
The opportunity this presents for brands is major, how would you like to create a devoted page for your label which shoppers will be able to buy from directly in an instant mobile friendly experience with overnight shipping to 170 countries around the globe. Impressive right? But perhaps the most alluring feature is the image recognition function which allows you to upload that perfect LBD you saw running down the street and wait for Net-a-Porter to find a match amongst one of their hundreds of lines. It’s like Shazam but for fashion, and make no mistake that will be powerful.
So what can we learn from this? Well to put it simply, social media might just be taking over the world and the way you are buying and selling today, could be completely different tomorrow.
