Move over search, you no longer reign supreme in digital advertising, especially amongst Australian Millennials. Cue Social Media Advertising.

We were extremely happy to discover that social media advertising ranks as being one of the most influential on purchase decisions, in line with Search. I mean, we already knew this, but to see it “in writing” takes it next level #knowwhatimean.

In the recent Media Consumer Survey by Deloitte, 40% of Australians identified social media advertising as having the greatest influence on their overall purchase decisions and both Trailing Millennials (Age 14-26) and Leading Millennials (Age 27-32)  have noted that social media advertising is the most influential form of digital advertising, ranking it amongst their top three with sponsored search and unsponsored search following suit.

What fascinates me the most is that Millennials can confidently identify and admit that social media advertising influences their purchasing behaviour. This tells me a few things; Millennials are hyper aware, they’re extremely savvy and they don’t actually mind being advertised to.

It’s safe to say that as a Leading Millennial, that the above is true. Yes, you probably think I’m being biased because I’m Managing Director and Co-Founder of a social media agency. Though, little do you know I used to be one of those Marketers who would boast about being superhuman, not falling for marketing and being privy to every technique under the sun. Well now, most of my purchases, especially clothing, have been influenced by what I consume on social media channels (especially Instagram) on a daily basis.
